A brand-new Expert Center and advanced Statistics page

Bondora News

With our next release, we are excited to introduce you our brand-new Expert Center and advanced Statistics page. Regarding statistics and reporting in general, this is our biggest feature release so far. During 2015 we gathered feedback from our investors about what their wish list would look like concerning data. Our engineering team tried to grant most of the wishes and we hope that you like the result. Now, we’ll invite you to our little data tour!

STATISTICS PAGE
Our upgraded Statistics page features all the most valuable charts and reports that help you keep track of your Bondora portfolio. All the necessary information about your account, returns, processing of overdue loans etc. are now easily accessible on one page without you having to look around for information across multiple pages.

  • 1. INVESTMENT

Bondora Investments graph

We added a drop down menu where you can now find loan charts by 5 different criteria:

1. Loan status – shows investments principal amount proportions according to repayment schedule.
2. Loan purpose – shows investments principal amount proportions by loan purpose.
3. Loan rating – shows investments principal amount proportions by Bondora Rating.
4. Country – shows investments principal amount proportions according to country.
5. Bid size – shows investments principal amount proportions according to balance of the bid.

  • 2. COMPARISON OF NET RETURNS OF DIFFERENT INVESTORS

Statistics Net return comparison graph

This chart compares the performance of different investors across the entire portfolio. You can see how many investors fall within a certain range of returns and the data can be further filtered by the size of investors’ portfolios as well as the length of their track record. The chart also shows your position in this comparison.

  • 3. ANNUALIZED NET RETURN ON INVESTMENT

Statistics Annualized net return graph

This chart demonstrates the annualized net return of the portfolio at a certain given time. Only payments made and scheduled until that date are considered in this calculation.

  • 4. INVESTMENT QUALITY PER MONTH

Statistics Investment quality graph

This graph shows your loan status in historical view. Investment quality is highlighted by the proportion of overdue loans.

  • 5. ACTUAL RECOVERY RATE COMPARISON

Statistics Recovery rate comparison graph

This chart shows recovery information about investor’s current portfolio including all loans which have defaulted at least once. Percentage is calculated by dividing actual repayments since the loan first defaulted by scheduled payments until today. You can filter the period, the current status of the loan, its recovery status (in collection or recovery) and group the results by month, quarter and year. Recovery Status filter allows you to look at the results segmented by the way how the specific non-performing loans are being currently handled. Cases that are being pursued through legal recovery are found under Recovery and cases that are being processed by Bondora or debt collection agencies are found under Collection. This easier classification replaces the previous stages report. You can also choose which repayments (either all, principal or interest) you are comparing to which part of the schedule. This report allows you to establish discount probability factors for the future planned cash flow report we are introducing below.

EXPERT CENTER PAGE

Our brand-new Expert Center features more complex and specific charts that cater the more advanced investor. It combines Data Export, Cash Flow, Account Statement and Authorized Apps into one page. We are releasing Expert Center as a Beta version – your feedback is most welcome to us so we can improve the functionality even more.

  • 1. HISTORICAL CASH FLOW

Expert Center Historical cash flow graph

This chart shows your monthly cash flow based on actual transfers. We are loving the convenience of the row TOTAL that sums up the period you have searched for. Also, a column that comes in handy is NET INTEREST INCOME that shows your cash flow and how much you have earned.

  • 2. FUTURE PLANNED CASH FLOW

Expert Center Future planned cash flow graph

This chart shows monthly future cash flow based on scheduled payments. An important snippet on this forecasting chart is – Probability settings – where you can set the probability on your planned cash flow. For example, if you set the debt probability to 50% then it will show 50% of the amounts under the according columns. You can also save the settings you have once chosen and they will be available the next time you log in. The row TOTAL sums up the period you have searched for.

  • 3. ACCOUNT STATEMENT

Expert Center Account statement 24h graph

This chart shows the transactions for the last 24 hours.

  • 4. DATA EXPORT

Expert Center Data export graph

If you need more data about your account statement then you can use this data export functionality. It gives you a specific and detailed view for a longer period.

  • 5. AUTHORIZED APPS

Expert Center Apps graph

This table shows all the API tokens registered to user and the activity log.

Please note that the data on the charts is illustrative and is not based on actual data.

  1. Hi Bondora,
this looks great, a little bit like a “turnaround” – back to the transperancy of the old bondora I liked so much. Great decision, I’m looking forward to see it live.

  2. This looks great! I welcome very much these changes. I have one question, where can I find the expected rates of recovery expressed against the loan principal? As I understand, Bondora uses discounting of the loan principal when estimating the expected rates of recovery. So I would like to see the formulas and discounts applied to each loan class (eg internal valuations for each defaulted loan class/category that Bondora applies). Also are such calculations also dynamic in the same way as net returns are?

    • Thanks Denis! The new tool lets you see the recoveries against the loan principal or planned interest. You can then use these numbers in the cash flow modelling tool. In the future you will also be able to use the cash flow modelling tool results as the basis for your account value and net return calculations.

Our pricing models are based on discounted recovery rates that are calculated against the exposure at default (default + accured interest – default is approx 90% of EAD). However due to the nuances of the pricing model we use the loan nominal interest rate to discount the cash flows so if you invest in a 50% HR loan or a 40% HR loan then the underlying discounting has been different. Its dependant on the interest rate of the specific loan rather than the grade. Furhermore our credit analysts use trendlines on top of the actual data (to model recovery curves for the duration of loan cycle) in the calculations as existing data is too short in some cases to show the real expected recovery.

  3. Hi Partel,

It is quite hard for me to understand your post.
I think it would be great if you could explain the pricing algorithm and those recovery curves you talk on a different blog entry. It would be really interesting to see how bondora works being the curtains.

Non related: As a investor at first I thought that I could make a quick buck at bondora, but it is not the case. Bondora is a long term investment and new investors should be made more aware of that I think.

    • Thanks Helder! We will surely add more detail on our pricing in this blog over the coming months.

Yes, Bondora is a long term investment and this is what our investors say as well. Our earlier studues have shown that over 3/4 of the investors consider Bondora a long term investment with a 5+ year view.

  4. Sorry, but this is not at all what I expected!
    – why is account statement only for “experts” and why do you show only 1 day now?
    – you don’t show loan statement!
    – I hide again informations about defaulted loans! Why did you remove it from statistics?
    – are this pies by sum or by number?

Sorry not an improvement. You hide again important information. There ARE defaulted loans – where can I find them now? Not in loanstate, not in Investment risk profile per issued month .

    • Morning Martin!

Account statement was used by approx 10% of the users and typically the same group that was also using Secondary Market. The Expert Centre combines all reports that are numbers driven or have granular functionality rather than overview charts that can be found under Statistics. The last 24 hours of the account statement are shown in the section and longer data can be pulled in the Data Export (that does not have the current day available). So intra-day transactions can be pulled through the UI and longer data through data export – both are on the same page. The latest 24 hours are in the view as its not supported in the data export and we know that customers like you use this info for trading on the secondary market.

Overview of defaults and corresponding recovery has not gone anywhere. In case you are interested in understanding your cash flow from loans in default and earlier cash flow use the recovery chart under Statistics and planned cash flow report under Expert Centre. You can also look at the portfolio based on different filters (including status and recovery stage) under Investments section (PS! We will soon bring the Total row into the top as well so you can see the numbers quickly). If you want more granular information then use the Data Export “Investments list” report.

Pie charts are based on sum of loan balances rather than loan pieces. Specifically:

PS! What do you mean by a loan statement?

  5. Hi,

Just like Martin I think losing the recovery table is a pity. It was quite useful and woud give us a nice overview of our defaulted portfolio.

The recovery graph, would be far more useful if it provided more filters, namely loan rating and country.Besides the possibility to show absolute values instead of percentages would be very welcome.
On the same graph when I hover the mouse over the columns I am shown some values that are in the order of a few hundreds of thousands of euros. I could try to guess what it means, but it would be better if they showed my exposure for that period of time.

The pie chart for the loan status is also not the most interesting graph, I would rather see a pie chart with the real loan status ( performing, late and in recovery). I know that I can find that information easily, although having it in a simple graph would be much nicer. (just a suggestion)

    • Hi Hélder!

The old recovery stages view did not work for a long time (since we established multiple collection & recovery procedures) as it was built for a pure court collection process. It also assumed the process is linear (e.g. stage 1 to stage 2 etc.). Since we set up multiple C&R routes cases that had been delayed in court were handled over to DCAs in some cases or a case that did not go through the expedited payment ordred process was put back to stage 1 when an alternative court process was started. However the stages and information are still linked with the loans and available under the Investments tab filters.

The first version of recovery report under the investor view shows the absoluate values as per loan-level data. We are currently still working on the second iteration that will show the absolute values based on the investor note-level data. We will further add an option to filter loans that are sold. Expect this to come with the next release!

  6. Hi.

A problem with planned cashflow – I need to fill in all the correct probabilities to get an accurate prognosis but I cant do that right now because the columns that showed planned principal/interest for previous months are gone, I only see the actually received principal/interest but can not compare it with planned cashflow for these months. Please add predicted principal/interest columns to past months’ cashflow since its a pain to do it all on excel :/ .

An idea for the probabilities – calculate probabilites of the past month, quarter and year for each portfolio (after each months end for example) and display them under the “planned future cashflow” section to enable users to fill them in if they wish to see what happens when everything stays largely the same in their portfolio.

An idea for the past cashflow chart – enable the user to specify which graphs are shown. At the moment i can display the net interest graph only. I’d like to display total interest, total principal etc. separately.

Last but not least ;) – We need to know how big proportion of the portfolio value is pinned down under defaulted or overdue loans. It is very important to know that since the stance of a loan determines its liquidity on the secondary market. A graphical overview in the form of a pie chart depicting defaulted, overdue and on schedule loans’ percent of portfolio value would be much appreciated. Once again – can be done on excel but everything takes workhours.

I hope to see these implemented

    cheers

    • Hi!
Thanks for the good ideas. I added the three ideas to the backlog:
      1) Simple tool for seeing probability for also current, not only defaulted loans (this can be seen under Statistics)
      2) Showing some of these parameters along-side the planned cash flow report
      3) Choosing the data content on the cash flow report chart

  7. It is keyhole design in past cashflow tab. Not user friendly at all. Especially as most expert have wide screens.
Data itself is great, but please provide a possibility to download the same data as report (Excel).

    • Hi Aleks
Yes, the overall layout will be also improved to support wide screens. The usage trends have moved for bigger screens in the investor sections and we will need to adjust to this.
I added this request along with the Excel download into the backlog for our product team. Thanks!

  8. Dear Bondora

Please bring back the old CashFlow statement, where you could go to a single month break down and view the Actual vs Planned income by single dates. The new CashFlow page is cumbersome and does not show the distribution of total monthly cash flow by dates. This is HUGE drawback from how it was before. Honestly, this was the only report I was following at, and you ruined it.

    Regards
    Janoš

    • Hi Janoš!
Thanks for the feedback. We received a lot of requests to change the cash flow report as most investors did not find the previous version useful. We will also add the day-level view soon to the new version!

  9. Not only the day-level breakdown, but Actual receivables vs Planned is also CRUCIAL! What sense it makes to see only the future “PLANNED”, and not now the difference with actual receivables?! Before I could see both actual income vs planned (and calculate the % how it fills over the course of the month), how can I track it now???

    • Thanks for the feedback. Historic cash flow are hard facts based on the cash received. Future cash flow is an estimate of future payments that investors can adjust based on inputs they can get from the recovery chart. We as requested above will also look to add a report that will allow to also estimate proability of payments from current loans. If there is wider spread demand we will also add a separate report to show previous planned payments.

  10. Yes, I miss detailed cash flow by day and planed vs done payments too.

I did now build my own statistics page showing overdue/defaulted loans by API.
But I have no access to
    – account statement data for more than this 1 day, and this is very short
    – recovery values
I don’t understand this numbers in recovery statistics shown on your site. Are this values of my portfolio or from total loanbook?

  11. Dear Pärtel

Please bring back the old “Cash Flow” tab (because it’s really important and valuable) and do whatever else you wish in the new “Expert Center” for the ones who requested changes.

    Regards
    Janoš

    • HI Janoš,
As I told Tom we are already working on these requests to enhance the information in the expert centre!

  12. Can you please give more information to the recovery status graph?
    1. What is shown on the right axis? Date of 1. default?
    2. What does “planed rates” mean? I see ridiculous recovery values up to 300%.
If I got it right, is the repayment divided by the SHEDULED payment. I.g. if a loan defaults after 3 months, repays everthing after 6 month you will show 57/3 = 1900% ?! That would not be a very professional calculation. When a loan repaid all principal has to be calculated as “sheduled”.

    • Martin, thanks for the questions on the recovery chart. Please note that the investor personal statistics recovery chart will be updated with the next release to: (1) show absolute figures not on loan level but on investor note level; (2) to better include secondary market transactions by showing planned/actual cash-flow for the period the investor owned the note.

      Answers to your questions below:
      1) The year, quarter or month is the period in which the loan 1st defaulted
      2) Planned drop-down allows you to look at how much repayments were scheduled over the period from default till now. You can filter by looking at all scheduled payments, principal only or interest only. You can then compare these with actual repayments (once again all, principal
      repayments or interest repayments).

For example if you look under general statistics and look at year level data, comparing principal planned with principal received you can see that 52% of planned payments were received for loans that defaulted in 2015, 45% for loans in 2014, 79% loans in 2013 and 100% for loans defaulted in 2009. If you now compare interest received with interest planned you would see 6% for 2015, 8% for 2014, 40% for 2013 126% for 2012 etc.

You can then decide which levels to use in your probability assumptions for future cash flow. As repayments on defaulted loans are directed at the principal until its fully repaid you won’t see much of interest recoveries for a couple of years after which the interest received proportion might go beyond 100% due to late fees and additional interest calculated during the time the loan was overdue. That is why some loans that default end up paying more than they actually planned.

On a portfolio level such edge cases should not be very visible unless some cohorts had very low defaults and the results are not statistically very representative. Therefore we recommend to use larger cohorts like quarters or years in your analysis to get stable figures.

  13. Hello,

I’m missing a clear overview of the payments on a day to day basis. I can see on my account statement what I have received the last 24 hours (e.g. partial principal paid, amount and BO user). I’m missing an simple overview what this borrower should have paid, and what other payments I should have received on this day.

    Tom

    • Hi Tom!
Thanks for the post. We are soon adding the following features:
      1) day-level view to the cash flow
      2) additional filtering options to Investments list so you can find loans that paid or missed a payment yesterday or any other date without going to the cash flow view

  14. That’s great news, filtering by date of missed payment is extremely useful.
    Thank’s for adding that feature.
