Statistics: Expected returns and competitive bid levels

In this review we look at new information on our statistics page. The chart illustrates the inverse relationship between loan ratings and the annualized expected return. As the rating drops the expected return rises. This dynamic is the risk/reward relationship at work. The higher rated loans, which offer lower relative risk, command greater bids. These loans are popular among our investors especially those choosing the “Conservative” approach with the Portfolio Manager.

Performance of recovery process – March 2017

We offered our regular overview of the monthly recovery process performance. The average recovery performance for 2016 was 64% which outperformed the average recovery over the last three years of 51%. In Finland, the three-year average recovery stayed on par with last months rate while the average recovery for 2016 increased 10 percentage points to 56%. Estonia’s average 2016 recovery performance is essentially flat at 63% and its three-year total slightly higher at 67%. Recoveries in Spain and Slovakia each saw a decrease of 9 percentage points compared to past months recovery overview.

Generally, investors seeking a balance between risk and reward focused on B and C rated loans representing the two most popular choices as measured by proportion across all countries at 18.97% and 22.23% respectively.

Performance of recovery process – February, 2017

We provided our usual monthly overview of Bondora’s recoveries. Finland, Spain and Slovakia have each made strong improvements in their 2016 average recovery performance relative to their total combined average for 2014 and 2015. Throughout 2015 and 2016 Spain, Finland and Estonia have all experienced periods of improved recovery. Along with improvements, all three countries saw an average decrease of three percentage points in Q1 and Q2 of 2015 compared to last month.

Why isn’t the Portfolio Manager investing my funds faster?

In this post we shed some light on the question often asked by our investors – why the Portfolio Manager sometimes isn’t investing funds at sufficient speed. The reason is the popularity of the higher rated loans. Naturally, many of our investors are eager to fund borrowers with a less risky credit profile. Resultantly, the AA, A, and B rated loans are exceedingly popular. We visualize this fact with a graph representing this relationship with a variable that reflects the bid competition for each rating.
